About the Internship

Metabolic software’s mission is to leverage technology solutions to bring the economy within planetary boundaries. Metabolic Software is a diverse team with extensive knowledge in sustainability and software product development.

As a sustainability methods intern, you work within the product team on the development of Link, an assessment solution for nature-related impacts and risk. The role focuses on research and development of frameworks and methodologies that can improve the granularity for the users of Link. This will contribute to helping more robust and granular software. 

Key activities within this role include data collection and processing, desk research on existing frameworks, process documentation, and functional design. You will get the opportunity to discover what working in a product team entails and be able to experience project work for large organizations up close.

The internship starts in September 2024, and should last for 5-6 months. The internship requires four to five days of work per week, and cannot be combined with writing a thesis. It provides a stipend amounting to €877,59 / month (based on 40 hours per week).


We are looking for someone with the following qualifications:

    • Enrolled in industrial ecology, environmental science or similar (at least until March 2025 – please mention your expected graduation date in your CV)
    • Desired skills /experience/knowledge:
      • Process analysis and design
      • Excel or advanced data processing skills
      • GIS experience
      • Life Cycle / Carbon Footprint Assessment
      • Nice-to-have: experience with biodiversity and nature assessments
      • Nice-to-have: experience with Python, R, SQL or other data related code languages
    • Research experience (i.e., via a university degree or work experience)
    • Great analytical skills
    • The ability to work independently
    • Enjoys fast-paced environments and adapting to uncertainty
    • Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and organization
    • Great team working skills
    • Strong written and spoken communication skills (English)
    • Self-awareness of personal career development goals
    • Minimum availability is 4 days per week. This internship cannot be combined with writing a thesis

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for an internship with Metabolic the following criteria must be met:

  • Enrolled for the entire duration of an internship (at least until March 2025)
  • Have a residence permit in the Netherlands (valid for working purposes and for the entire duration of the internship)
  • Have, or be able to request, a BSN (burgerservicenummer/citizen service number)
