Project Description

WWF believes that agriculture, diet choices and food security are part of the challenge and solution for keeping our human impacts within the carrying capacity of our planetary boundaries, which includes the conservation and restoration of a flourishing biodiversity.

Metabolic is conducting an analysis of the global food system, to inform the development of a food vision and roadmaps towards a healthy, sustainable and resilient food system. The analysis, vision and roadmaps will serve as a framework to engage with policy, business and consumers to reduce global biodiversity impacts in the food sector.

In this project, we build on existing strategies and insights from the WWF network and engage with a broad group of stakeholders from WWF and beyond to identify key leverage points and co-create the foundation for the transition towards a healthy, sustainable and resilient global food system.

Process

Current State of the Global Food System:

The global food system is vast and complex. The first phase of the project focuses on gaining a thorough understanding of the current system, including its structural elements, behaviour, and impacts. Our analysis is aimed at understanding the key leverage points for change within the system, which are evaluated through expert interviews and system dynamics modelling.

Visioning a Sustainable, Healthy, and Resilient Food System:

Using our understanding of the current system, we will create a shared vision for a healthy, resilient, and sustainable food system. The visioning will be conducted with participation of EU WWF offices, followed by a sounding board session with key experts, thought leaders, NGOs, policy makers and business in the area of food and agriculture.

Developing a Roadmap for Europe:

The identified leverage points will be translated into a set of roadmaps with key interventions for policy, business and consumers. The evidence and insights from this report could be the starting point for a similar process to develop a vision and roadmaps towards a healthy, sustainable, and resilient food system with a global scope.

Results

We are developing a European vision for a healthy, resilient, and sustainable global food system. our identification of key leverage points in the system will culminate in a comprehensive roadmap for policy, business, and consumers on how to achieve this vision.
