Project Description

Moving towards a circular economy is at the heart of the resource efficiency agenda under the Europe 2020 strategy for smart, sustainable, and inclusive growth. The circular economy agenda is especially relevant for the textiles sector, which is notorious for its abysmal environmental and social performance at a global scale, and its mostly “linear” structure, where the vast majority of textiles globally are landfilled or incinerated.

In this project, we developed a comprehensive circular economy strategy for C&A, one of Europe’s largest clothing retailers. The goal of this strategy is to achieve a 100% closed material cycle. To get there, we analysed and proposed new approaches for product design, business models, material recovery schemes, and innovations across the supply chain. These interventions were structured and presented in a roadmap.

Process

Evaluating the State of the Global Textiles and Fashion Sector:

The textiles sector is one of the largest and most globalized sectors. We assessed the impacts of the the system, and summarized the major trends, innovations, and new business models emerging in the sector. The output was a full Current State report of the global textiles sector.

Visioning a Circular Fashion Retailer:

As part of our analysis, we examined how circular economy performance criteria could be translated into a full set of performance KPIs for C&A. These indicators provided a framework for evaluating success, which would be reflected in our final recommendations and roadmap.

Modelling a Circular C&A:

We conducted an extensive material flow analysis of C&A’s products, and modelled a number of interventions that would ultimately achieve a closed-loop material cycle. We also evaluated the financial implications of moving towards a circular business model.

Results

We produced a comprehensive strategy and roadmap on how to achieve a 100% closed material cycle, including an economic evaluation of the costs and revenues over time.
